Despite being miles away from the sea, Madrid experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) have the warmest and most pleasant weather. While the middle of winter (January-February) is very cold, the weather is very hot in June and August.
Madrid has a fantastic (and air-conditioned) metro and a network of buses that connect everywhere a visitor might visit, including the airport. 10-way tickets are 12.20 euros (1-way tickets are 1.5 euros). For longer journeys there are Cercanias suburban trains and national Renfe rail services. Taxis are plentiful and provide a safe and relatively inexpensive way to get around.
Business hours have undergone significant standardization in the last 10 years for almost all major cultural institutions and many large retailers, where late and long Spanish lunches (2 to 5 p.m.) no longer exist. But small independent shops and offices still close in the middle of the day, and virtually all shops are closed on Sundays and national holidays.
