Rome Airports

Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino – Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (IATA: FCO) is the major international airport in Rome, the capital of Italy. It became one of the busiest airports in Europe, serving 40.5 million passengers in 2015. It is located in Fiumicino, 19.9 nautical miles (35 km, 21.7 mi) west of Rome's historic city centre.

The airport serves as the main hub for the largest Italian airline, Alitalia, and the low-fare Spanish airline Vueling, owned by International Airlines Group. According to the total number of passengers, it was the 8th most used airport in Europe and the 35th busiest airport in the world in 2014. The airport, built on an area of 29 square kilometers, takes its name from the famous polymath Leonardo da Vinci, who first developed a helicopter prototype and built a winged flying machine in 1480.

Transport

Roads

Leonardo da Vinci is approximately 35 km away by car from the historical center of Rome. Transportation to the airport is provided by a six-lane highway and many taxis and buses.

Train

Fiumicino Aeroporto railway station is served by the Leonardo Express train operated by Trenitalia and can be reached from the airport terminal. The non-stop trip to Termini Station takes 30 minutes, with departures twice an hour. Alternatively, local trains (FL1) run every 15 minutes and stop at all stations. However, these trains do not go to Termini Station. Passengers must transfer in Trastevere, Ostiense (Metro Piramide) or Tuscolana.

The railway opened in December 1989 and offers direct or stop-stop services.
