Stuttgart Airport (IATA: STR) is the international airport of Stuttgart, the capital of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Named after Stuttgart's former mayor, Manfred Rommel, the airport is Germany's sixth busiest airport and had 10.5 million passengers pass through its gates in 2015. The airport, which is an important hub for Germanwings, hosts long-haul flights to various cities and holiday destinations in Europe and to Atlanta.
Located approximately 13 km south of Stuttgart, the airport is located on the borders of the nearby towns of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt and Stuttgart itself. In 2007, Stuttgart Trade Fair, Germany's ninth largest exhibition center, was moved to the area right next to the airport. In addition, the headquarters of the global car parking company APCOA Parking is located here.
Land Transportation
Vehicle
There are two main motorways: Bundesautobahn 8 (A8) just north of the airport and connects the cities of Karlsruhe and Stuttgart with Ulm, Augsburg and Munich. Bundesstraße 27 (B27) goes towards Stuttgart city center and also southwards to Tübingen and Reutlingen.
Buses
There are connecting buses from the cities of Esslingen am Neckar, Reutlingen and Tübingen. In addition, German long-distance bus companies ADAC Postbus , DeinBus and Flixbus stop at the airport in Stuttgart and have direct services to some other cities.
Commuter Railroad
It is possible to easily reach Stuttgart Airport in 30 minutes from Stuttgart Flughafen/Messe station, using the Stuttgart suburban trains S2 or S3 from the city's main railway station.
Future Long Distance Railway
In the future, it is planned to connect the airport with the Stuttgart - Ulm high-speed railway line, which is under construction within the scope of the Stuttgart 21 railway redevelopment project. Therefore, a new long-distance train station will be built near the airport's existing suburban station. The new station, where ICE high-speed trains will pass, will be connected to the new line with an underground tunnel. The Stuttgart-Ulm line is planned to open in 2020, and its official opening will be in 2022.
