When to Go to Athens

Athens is sunny and warm throughout the year, so it can be visited at any time of the year. Most tourists prefer to visit Athens in spring and autumn, when temperatures are most reasonable. Although August is very hot, hotel prices decrease during this period and the streets are quieter. Likewise, fewer visitors come during the winter months. Some tourists choose to visit Athens off-season to enjoy the city when it's quiet.

DON'T MISS

  • Wander around the metro station in Syntigma Square (otherwise known as Constitution Square), which displays scaffolding and various artifacts found during the construction of the metro, including pre-Christian plumbing.

  • Change of duty ceremonies of soldiers in front of the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers in Stigma Square, in front of the Pink Parliament Building. Every Sunday at 11 a.m., Evzone guards—soldiers chosen for their height and rumored good looks—in their ceremonial regalia (yes, dressed in pleated skirts and pom-pom shoes) perform an elaborately choreographed parade.

  • Wandering through the streets of Anafiotika, lined with white, is the 19th-century village on the northern slope of Akrapöl, built by immigrants from the Cycladic island of Anafi. It is a quiet and homey oasis in the busy heart of Athens.
