About London

When to Go

Spring starts early in the UK and although the weather can be variable, it's the best time for sightseeing (but don't forget to take an umbrella). The mild winter and traditional Christmas shopping also make November and December attractive.

Transport in London

There are many options, starting from the metro (also called tube or underground, single rides start from $2.60) to buses, ferries, commuter trains and taxis. Transport is divided into zones; The further the area is from London, the more expensive it is to get there. If you're staying in the city for a few days, get a daily ($9.90) or weekly ($49.50) transportation pass

Weather in London

January is the coldest month with an average lowest temperature of 7°C and July is the warmest month with an average temperature of 19°C.

Things to Know Before You Go

London is expensive and unlike America, it doesn't have a welcoming culture (many black taxis do not accept card payment). To get the best deals, plan ahead and buy your restaurant and theater tickets.

London Airports

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport (IATA: LHR) is the main international airport in the United Kingdom, London, Hillingdon, England. Heathrow is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom, the busiest airport in Europe by passenger traffic and the sixth busiest airport in the world by total passengers. While it hosted a record 75 million passengers in 2015, this figure increased by 2.2 percent compared to 2014.

Heathrow is located 14 miles (23 km) west of London and covers 12.27 square kilometers (12.27 square kilometers) with two parallel runways facing east and west and four operating terminals. London Heathrow is the headquarters of British Airways and the principal operations center of Virgin Atlantic.

Public transport

Train

Heathrow Express: It is a direct and non-stop train service from London's Paddington station. Trains run every 15 minutes for journeys lasting 15 minutes (21 minutes from Terminal 5). Trains depart from Heathrow Terminal 5 station or Heathrow Central stations (Terminals 1, 2 and 3). Heathrow Express's transfer services operate between Terminal 4 and Heathrow Central and are connected by services from London and Terminal 5.

Heathrow Connect: A service that runs to Paddington and stops at five National Rail stations. Trains depart every 30 minutes for a journey lasting 27 minutes. Heathrow Connect departs from Heathrow Central stations. For the Reading connection, it picks up passengers from Hayes and Harlington.

London Underground (Piccadilly line): the airport is served by four stations: Terminals 2 and 3, connecting to Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 passenger terminals; Hatton Cross station is in the maintenance area. Normal transport time from Heathrow Central to Central London is approximately 40-50 minutes.

South West Trains has a direct bus connection to Feltham railway station, allowing passengers to catch trains to Reading, Windsor, Clapham Junction and Waterloo Station.

Bus

There are many buses providing transportation to Heathrow airport central bus stops, Terminals 1, 2 and 3 and Terminals 4 and 5, and the routes of these buses are as follows:
Long-distance bus services operated by National Express and Oxford Bus Company, providing transportation to various parts of England and Victoria Coach Station in London.

HotelHoppa buses provide transportation to hotels and Heathrow area from each terminal.
Express services to Watford, St Albans and Harlow (Green Line route 724), Croydon (London Buses route X26) and High Wycombe (Carousel Buses).
Local bus services by London Buses, First Berkshire & The Thames Valley and other companies provide services to nearby towns and surrounding London counties.
At night when trains are not running, there is a night bus service number N9.

Inter-Terminal Transfer

Terminals 1, 2 and 3 are within walking distance of each other. Transfers to Terminals 4 and 5 are made by Heathrow Express train or buses. Transport between Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect and Heathrow Central and Terminals 4 and 5 is free. Normal fares apply for transportation between terminals via London Underground. Within the scope of the Heathrow FreeFlow route, local buses offer free transfers between terminals, and passengers must tell the driver where they are going to avoid being charged a fee.

For transit passengers in the airport area, bus transfer between terminals is provided free of charge.
The ULTra Personal Rapid Transport system, which opened in April 2011, carries passengers to Terminal 5 and the commercial vehicle park at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph). There are 21 small carriers here, each with the capacity to carry up to 4 adults, two children and their luggage.

Taxi

Taxis are available at every terminal.

Vehicle

It is possible to reach Heathrow via the M4 Motorway, A4 road (Terminals 1 and 3), M25 highway (Terminals 4 and 5) and A30 road (Terminal 4). Each terminal has drop-off and pick-up areas, as well as short- and long-term multi-storey car parks. All four Heathrow entrance areas are for disembarking passengers only. There are other car parks outside the airport that are not operated by Heathrow Airport Holding. The most easily visible one is the National Car Parks building. Other options are also available and these car parks are connected to the terminals by line buses.

Bicycle

There are also bicycle routes (mostly off-road) to some of the terminals. Free bicycle parking spaces are located in car parks 1 and 1A, Terminal 4 and the Interchange Plaza in the north and south of Terminal 5.

Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport (IATA: LGW) is an airport located in south-east England, 47.5 km south of central London and 2.7 nautical miles (5 km, 3.1 mi) north of Crawley. London Gatwick airport, also known as London Gatwick, is the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom (after London Heathrow) in terms of total number of passengers.

Built as a small airport in the 1920s, Gatwick has been in use for commercial flights since 1933. The airport has two terminals, also known as the North Terminal and the South Terminal, and the area covered by each of them is 98,000 m 2 and 160,000 m 2 respectively. A main runway with a length of 3,316 m operates at the airport. There is also a second runway, but due to its proximity to the main runway, it can only be used if the other one is out of use. In 2015, 40.3 million passengers used the airport, an increase of 5.7 percent compared to 2014.

Land Transportation

Gatwick has set a target of 40 percent public transport usage when annual passenger traffic reaches 40 million (in 2015), and 45 percent public transport usage when it reaches 45 million.

Path

The airport can be reached from the motorway at junction 9A of the M23, which connects to the main M23 motorway 1 mile east of junction 9. M23 to London ring road, M25 9 miles (14 km) to the north, which connects to much of Greater London, the South East and beyond. The M23 main road leads to the airport. It is also possible to reach Gatwick via the A23. This road provides access to Horley and Redhill in the north and Crawley and Brighton in the south. The A217 connects northwards to the town of Reigate. There are short and long-term car parks inside and outside the airport, but most of them are full during the summer months. There are parking restrictions in and near Gatwick.

Railway

The airport railway station next to the Southern Terminal provides services to Victoria and London, Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne, Portsmouth and Bognor Regis and further south via the Brighton Main Line. Although the Gatwick Express to Victoria (operated by Southern) is the best known transport at the station, other companies (including Thameslink and First Great Western) also use the station, and Southern operates services to Victoria and London Bridge under its own name. Thameslink offers direct train services to Luton Airport; First Great Western trains provide direct access between Gatwick Airport, Guildford and Reading, which in turn provides access to Oxford, Bristol, Plymouth and Cardiff. Foot passengers can reach Heathrow via X26 Express Bus out of East Croydon station, and the line also has an intermediate stop for London rail services.

Bus

National Express Coaches operates buses to Heathrow Airport, Stansted Airport, other cities and towns and other parts of the country. Oxford Bus Company provides direct services to Oxford and EasyBus to Earls Court and West Brompton from both terminals.

Bicycle

The National Cycle Network's Route 21 runs under the Southern Terminus, providing traffic-free cycling trips north to Horley and south to Three Bridges and Crawley.

terminal transfer

The airport's North and South terminals are connected to each other by a 1.21 km elevated two-way automatic passenger transport system. These transit shuttles normally consist of two automatic and three-car driverless trains. Although colloquially known as a “monorail,” this shuttle runs on two, concrete tracks and rubber tires and is (technically) not a monorail. This line connects the terminals to each other and also provides access to the airport railway station from the Northern terminal.

London Stansted Airport

London Stansted Airport (IATA: STN, ICAO: EGSS) is an international airport located at Stansted Mountfitchet in Uttlesford, Essex, 30 miles (48 km) from central London and 0.93 mi (1.5 km) from the Hertfordshire border.

London Stansted Airport currently operates flights to 170 destinations in Europe, North Africa and Central and North America, and more European destinations than any other airport in the UK. Stansted serves as a base for a number of low-fare European airlines. It is the largest base for low-fare carrier Ryanair and serves 130 destinations. It was the UK's fourth busiest airport in 2015, after Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester. Stansted's runway is also used by private companies such as Harrods Aviation. Harrods Aviation's terminal is located opposite the main terminal building and is used for private jets and some state visits.

Land Transportation

Transit System

Stansted Airport Transit System connects the terminal to the satellite building with a free automated passenger transport system operating over a 2-mile (3 km) double concrete track. The system uses a mix of Adtranz C-100 and Bombardier Innovia APM 100 vehicles to transport passengers to their departure gates. Unlike transit at the similar Gatwick Airport, Stansted transit has access only within the airspace zone (only after passengers have passed security control).

trains

Stansted Airport railway station is located in the terminal building, directly below the terminal hall.

Transportation to London is via Stansted Express trains and from Liverpool Street in the center of London. These services depart every 15 minutes and the normal journey time is between 45 and 53 minutes. Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and London Underground metro lines passing through Liverpool Street provide transportation throughout London. Stansted Express also picks up passengers from Tottenham Hale on the tube's Victoria line and provides services to various parts of North London and the West End. Some Stansted Express lines on their way to London Liverpool street pick up passengers at Stansted Mountfitchet, Bishop's Stortford and/or Harlow Town.

CrossCountry provides transportation from the airport to Birmingham New Street via Cambridge, Peterborough and Leicester every 60 minutes. Abellio Greater Anglia offers a local stop service to Cambridge.

Buses

Scheduled express buses provide transport to and from Stratford (45 minutes), Victoria Coach Station (75 minutes), Liverpool Street Station (55 minutes) and Golders Green (70 minutes) (all of London). Fares are about half that of the train but it takes longer. The bus stop is right next to the terminal building. National Express operates scheduled but infrequent direct buses from Oxford to the airport, with line JL737 departing every hour, making the journey three hours long.

Several local bus services also serve the nearby communities of Bishops Stortford and Stansted Mountfitchet, the most important being the 510/509/508 (Harlow to Stansted via Stansted Mountfitchet, Parsonage Lane and Takeley respectively), the 308 (Bishops Stortford to Stansted to) and 700 Express (Stevenage to Stansted). Villagelink service 5 and 7 provide transportation to many nearby villages. Transportation from around the airport is free. The reason for this is the green travel plan implemented by BAA to reduce staff parking demands.

Stansted is also the departure point for X30 buses operated by First Essex to Southend-on-Sea via Chelmsford and Southend Airport. This route operates 24 hours a day.
